The 6th World Conference on Breast Cancer which is held every 3 years was in Hamilton, Ontario June 7-11 2011.
Why does the World Conference exist?
Each year more than one million women are diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 400,000 die. Today there are close to four million women living with breast cancer on our planet. The conference provides a unique opportunity for women across the world to come together with a variety of people who are concerned about breast cancer to share common issues that impact on survival and quality of life, and to advance global action on breast cancer. There were many sessions that the delegates could participate in. For example, – “Can breast self examination prevent breast cancer?” presented by Lucia Yiu, University of Windsor. – “Out of the shadows: challenging post treatment monsters” presented by Linda Learn, Hamilton Health Sciences. – “Breast cancer in the Bahamas and how it is affecting our women and sisters” presented by Andrea Sweeting, Bahamas.
There were also workshops, for example, the YWCA Encore programme presented by Marnie Warman (YWCA Hamilton). Meditation and Yoga for relaxation presented by Heather Greaves (Wellwood)
Even though the vendors were disappointed at the number of delegates who visited the Marketplace, those who did come and meet us were friendly and interested in our products and services. The number of those affected by breast cancer are staggering as stated in the WCBC programme. Far too many are dying from it.
WE NEED TO KEEP FIGHTING THIS DISEASE UNTIL WE ERADICATE IT
