Winter Blahs and Friends

After having a wonderful Christmas, vacation with my husband and friends, and celebrating my birthday, I’m having a tough time coping with the Winter blahs and getting focused on my business. This is where my friends help. I spoke to my friend Monica from glamjulz she just got back from a successful road trip where she met new retailers for her gorgeous jewelry. She is the most positive person I know, and uplifts me so much I wish I could speak to her every morning for a pep talk. (It’s okay, Monica I won’t be calling you daily!!)

Do you have someone like Monica in your life? I do hope so, we all need someone to lean on, talk to and confide in. I am lucky enough to have several. I have one friend who leans on me and I am so happy to be there for her. I have another friend, and we lean on each other. I have friends that I don’t see very often, but they are often in my thoughts. If we need to talk, we know we can pick up the phone and it is as though the time since we last spoke disappears. Just thinking about my friends, lifts me from the Winter blahs.

My Dad has been sick, but is now on the mend. I am so thankful.

I am going to see a friend who has had brain surgery to remove a benign tumor. I spoke to her and she is so positive, when I put the phone down, I thought - how can I be down? Life is great!

The Winter is starting to feel like winter, with the snow falling, I am reminded that nature is wonderful, life is wonderful with all it’s ups and downs. Living life to the fullest is best thing we can do!

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

Are you determined that 2012 is going to be the year you “get in shape” or “take more care of my health”.

Well, what a better way to do it than to join a Dragonboat Team. Not only will It will keep you fit, but you will make so many friends you won’t know where they all came from! Check out this video from my team Knot-A-Breast. We are based in Hamilton,Ontario so if you are within an hours drive, please think about joining us. (Unfortunately the criteria to race is that you have to have had breast cancer, however, supporters are very welcome and can go on the safety boat and help the team in general). Christmas Giving

Christmas is a time for giving and I’m sure we all have friends and family that we give gifts to.

BUT this week we had an order from a lady – nothing unusual in that. But after she received the order she sent me an e-mail. Check this out…

My order arrived this afternoon and I must say this gift is the most exciting I’m going to be giving this Christmas! My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last month and had her breast removed a few weeks ago! She is feeling uncomfortable in her own skin so I’m hoping this makes her feel whole again! I saw you months ago on the dragons den and thought what a great idea I’m sure my mother and I will be doing business with you again! Your idea is fantastic! Thanks so much and happy holidays

It bought tears to my eyes just thinking about how her Mom is going to feel when she receives this special gift from her daughter. Okay, I know it’s unusual to open a gift and find a boob, but knowing that her daughter cares so much about how she feels about herself will be the best feeling in the world. I’m sure she will be very proud of her.

But I also hope she will have a little chuckle and realise that in years to come she will be able to say “guess what I got for Christmas in 2011 – a boob” now not many people will be able to say that!!!

There are 2 very special fundraisers that I want to tell you about. One is a beautiful bracelet called “Three Little Wishes” by Glamjulz. Monica has produced this bracelet to raise money for a family whose young mother is battling breast cancer, they really need your help. Please check out Glamjulz website for details.

The other is an event is happening today – November 30th. It’s at BodyMed Boutique at 2033 Mount Forest Dr, (Mount Royal Plaza) Burlington, Ontario. From 2-8 Barb and her staff are hosting a fun time including a bake table, fun jewelry, coffee and treats. The event is raising money for an initiative that will enable women who are going for breast surgery at Joseph Brant Hospital to get a free post-surgical camisole. Let’s help them feel comfortable while they are going through their horrible ordeal. I will be there in the evening and I’d love to meet you. Please come out.

One of my retailers, Barb from BodyMed Boutique in Burlington, Ontario, has started an initiative to give every woman who has breast surgery at Joseph Brant Hospital, a post-surgical camisole.

I am involved in this initiative because it is important to let women know that they are being thought of at a very stressful time of their lives.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Over?

The month of October always seems to come and go so quickly – just like Christmas.

There are so many events going on to make us “Aware” of breast cancer, but for those of us living with it or surrounded by women who are living it WE don’t need reminding, do we?

It never ceases to amaze me that even though we are inundated with pink ribbons and fundraising events there are STILL women (and men) who don’t do breast self-examinations, don’t get annual checkups and there are still parents who don’t educate their children about the importance of taking responsibility for their own health.

Now that October is over – should we be less aware of breast cancer, should we stop talking about it? Of course the answer is NO, we have to be diligent about our health all year round, that is the only way we can be confident that we are doing all that is in our power to stay healthy.

However, like life, there needs to be balance. Maybe that’s why we have “Awareness Months” during the year. For one month of the year it is in our faces, like giving our heads a shake, and the rest of the year it may still be there, but in the back of our heads and not in front.

We call them “Awareness” months, because we are, hopefully, educating people to be aware and take charge of their health, but not to become obsessive and depressed about it. We all want happy and healthy lives, it is what we all strive for.

So please do that – be happy and take care of yourselves.

New Nightwear for women breast cancer survivors

My friends and I were part of a focus group regarding nightwear after breast surgery. The pretty night gowns were designed by a team from Ryerson University led by Sandra Tullio-Pow, Associate Professor in the MA Fashion Department.

We were given the night gowns to wear and then gave our feedback. We found that they were great to wear even if you get hot flashes. A lot of research was done on the material and style to make us feel comfortable and look great.
